About recycling

Recycling is a great way to reduce the amount of rubbish you throw away. If you recycle something rather than throwing it in the bin, it can be made into something new and will not be wasted.

There are lots of things that can be recycled e.g. paper, cans, glass bottles and jars. Once you’ve put these things in your recycling box or bin they are collected and taken to a recycling factory. At the factories the materials are broken down and remade so they can be used for something new.

Click here to see what happens to your paper when it gets recycled  , or read Recycler’s story.

Recycling is important because:

  • Recycling saves energy
Recycling one glass bottle or jar saves enough energy to run a Nintendo Wii for 5 hours!
  • Recycling can help tackle climate change
Recycling 1 tonne of paper saves 1.32 tonnes of CO2 – the equivalent of not driving 3,700 miles.
  • Recycling saves natural resources
Recycling aluminium cans helps to protect tropical rainforests by reducing the need to mine bauxite, the raw material used to make aluminium.

For ideas on how you can make a difference, why not look at Recycler’s top tips section?

Keep sending your work to Recycler at Waste Watch, 56-64 Leonard Street, London, EC2A 4LT or email recycler@wastewatch.org.uk and look for it here next term.

Please don't forget to add your first name and surname, age and your school name & town.

What people say about Recycler...

When you came to do an assembly at our school I liked your dance and I learnt a lot about recycling and reusing. I enjoyed it. I have got my mum to reuse the plastic bags from the supermarket.
