Welcome to my web page
I am Isobel your local home composting adviser. I have my own allotment and love gardening so composting is very important to me. I want to encourage everyone to compost, because it's so easy and it's absolutely fantastic stuff for the garden.
I enjoy spreading the word by attending events in your area, by talking to school children and of course I would be more than happy to talk to any group of individuals interested in finding out more about how to make really good compost. Feel free to visit me at a local event near you, or get in contact with me by calling 0845 600 0323.
In Lancashire home composting support is also available from the County Council and the volunteer Compost Gurus. If you would like to find out more about shows and talks in your area or about getting local help and advice from a Guru, please call the Lancashire County Council compost helpline on 0845 0500 110 or visit www.compost-it.org.uk

Spring is in the air
Spring is a great time of year to empty your compost bin. Bulbs and herbaceous perennials will slowly be emerging from the ground, so why not give them a much needed boost of compost to get them on their way?
The easiest way to empty the compost bin is to gently 'wiggle' it from side to side, then lift it upwards, remove altogether and place to one side. You will find that the contents of the bin will be shaped a bit like a sandcastle. If you have been composting all year round you will find that some of the materials have not fully broken down and these will need to be returned to the bin for a little longer.
When compost is ready it should have a sweet earthy smell and have a crumbly texture, although the odd piece of egg shell or woody materials may still be visible.
There are several ways in which to use your compost around the garden, please click on the link below for a detailed explanation

Once you have used your home made compost, you can replace the material that hasn't fully broken down. Then continue to add greens and browns as before and you can start the whole composting process again.
Easy wasn't it?
Bye for now
Isobel
