New facilities in Kent turn environmental problem into electricity

Using a new revolutionary process, cooking oil deposited in special tanks at 16 waste sites around Kent will be turned into electricity, without costing taxpayers a penny.

Used cooking oil clogs up sewers and can put wildlife in danger. However, this new scheme at Tovil Recycling site in Maidstone will means the oil is converted to a new fuel called LF 100 to generate electricity which will be passed into the National Grid.
According to Living Fuels, the new company developing the pioneering fuel, one litre of used oil can be converted into enough energy to make 240 cups of tea.  Each collection tanks hold 1,000 litres, which is enough to power an average home for a year.

The scheme has been rolled out across the county and will contribute towards the council’s target of raising its recycling rate to 42% by 2011.
