Credit crunch forces charities to recycle more

05 September 2008

Survey shows charitable donations will fall, increasing the need to raise funds through recycling.

Recycling organisations are set to benefit from a downturn in traditional charitable donations. According to a survey by YouGov, Britons will donate £655 million less to charities next year as a result of the credit crisis; 7 per cent less than the £9.5 billion donated last year, increasing the need for charities to raise funds through recycling.

An estimated £114 million could be raised through improved recycling, including the collection of 27 million recyclable used inkjet cartridges per year and 29 million unwanted mobile phones.

The Each One Counts campaign, a cost-free recycling service for unwanted mobile phones and used inkjet cartridges, which commissioned the research, said “although many charities already run recycling programmes, not all get involved in this free process. With the Each One Counts campaign recycling schemes are no longer limited to larger charities; now any charity can get involved.”
