Growth of household food packaging brought to a standstill

Targets to slow growth to zero achieved.

In 2005, an agreement called the Courtauld Commitment  was set up by the Waste & Resource Action Programme (WRAP) with the British Retail Consortium (BRC) to develop innovative packaging solutions so that less rubbish ends up in the household bin. This has been signed to date, by 32 major grocery retailers, brands and suppliers in the UK.

As part of this agreement the signatories pledged to slow packaging growth to zero by the end of 2008. The reduction is said to have been achieved despite population growth and rising food sales.
