Joan Ruddock launches Recycling Zone at Thorpe Park on 23 May 2008

Minister launches ‘on-the-go recycling'

09 June 2008

Waste and recycling minister Joan Ruddock launched a public recycling zone in Thorpe Park, Surrey on May 23, the first in a three year project to promote recycling on-the-go.

Thorpe Park has become the first base for a new "on-the-go recycling zone" designed to encourage visitors to recycle rather than bin the thousands of bottles and cans bought at the theme park every year. Six recycle points have been set up at the attraction, near Staines, by Coca-Cola, and WRAP.

The focus of the zones will be on recycling all brands of PET bottles and aluminium cans but other materials could be collected as well - Thorpe Park also takes paper.

The aim is to create 80 such zones by 2011, in other theme parks such as Alton Towers, and at shopping centres and major international travel hubs.
