Kerbside collection of cans in Daventry

Pioneering source separation kerbside system unveiled in Nuneaton

29 June 2008

Recycling at Nuneaton and Bedworth Council has "dramatically" increased following the launch of a pioneering new system for dealing with mixed plastic and card as part of its kerbside sort collection service.

Traditionally, it has been hard to collect plastics and card through systems that separate recyclables on the collection vehicle because they can’t be compacted and take up a lot of space on vehicles.

However, the council's recycling contractor, AbitibiBowater, has been trialling a new system which uses a split body compaction vehicle for plastics and card alongside its ordinary stillages to provide plenty of room for all materials. Since its inception, the system has collected around 20% more then previous services.
