Recycled glass market grows through bulk wine importing

28 May 2008

Results from the first phase of a new recycling project show it is boosting the UK market for recycled glass.

The GlassRite project encourages international wine producers to bulk import wine to the UK and bottle it on arrival. This means more wine bottles are made domestically and, as a result, recycled glass use has increased by nearly 24,000 tonnes a year.

Another element of the project is to lightweight bottles using less glass. Results so far show that this has reduced glass packaging by 11,400 tonnes a year. The combination of bulk importing and using lighter bottles has also helped to cut CO2 emissions by more than 28,000 tonnes a year.

The first phase of GlassRite Wine which ran from summer 2006 to March 2008 was managed by British Glass and included UK retailers, the international wine industry and glass manufacturers.
