UK set to get better at battery recycling

A new multiple producer compliance scheme is set to enter UK law later this year

The Government has responded to a consultation on how to manage battery recycling in UK. A new multiple producer compliance scheme is set to enter UK law later this year in order to meet the requirements of the EU Batteries Directive.

The scheme is a response to a December consultation by Defra and BERR on the collection, treatment and recycling of waste batteries. The UK has a long way to go to reach their target: 25% of waste portable batteries by 2012. Currently it collects just 3%.

Recent batteries collection trials suggest that deploying a range of methods will maximise the collection of batteries, with the mix of methods depending on local circumstances. The Government also highlighted the importance of properly communicating the imminent changes to battery recycling to the public.
