York celebrates recycling record

13 June 2008

City of York Council is celebrating record recycling figures, with less rubbish being sent to landfill than ever before.

Household waste going to landfill has fallen from 122,000 tonnes in 2006/07 to 118,000 in 2007/08 - a reduction of 3.3 per cent - the largest annual fall ever recorded in York.

And at the same time, York residents have achieved record recycling figure, with the rate increasing from 39.9 per cent in March 2007 to 43.4 per cent in March 2008.

This is despite an increase in the number of properties in York and the results mean more then 6,000 tonnes less waste is going to landfill than it did a year ago - the equivalent of over 620 lorry-loads of waste
