Hi,

Recycle Now Week (June 2-8) is a national week of action to encourage us all to recycle more of our household waste. TV presenter Denise Van Outen is backing the campaign, to encourage us all to turn a shade greener this summer.

This fun Ezine contains some top recycling tips from Denise, amazing recycling facts and figures, and the results of poll to find the nation's green heroes.

We hope you enjoy it.

Don’t throw it Outen this summer

RNW Denise3 Denise Van Outen is putting the glamour into green issues this summer, by urging us all to recycle.

The star of the BBC’s ‘Any Dream Will Do’ TV show is backing Recycle Now Week – a national week of action which aims to inspire everyone to recycle more of their household waste.

Running June 2nd - June 8th, loads of fun recycling events will take place across the country, organised by local authorities, supermarkets, offices and community groups.

Denise said: “Green is definitely the new black. I’ve been a committed recycler for several years, and it’s great to see that it’s no longer something just a few of us do. In fact, with everyone from George Clooney and Cameron Diaz to Lily Cole championing environmental issues, going green has never been more fashionable.

“When I’m at home in the UK, I always use my council’s doorstep collection service. It’s really easy to get into the habit, and it makes a lot of environmental sense.”

She added: “Recycle Now Week is a great opportunity to remind people to do their bit. Find out what’s happening locally, and get involved.”

Six of the best: Denise’s tips for a sizzling green summer

If you’re new to recycling, or fancy doing that little bit extra, try these simple but effective recycling tips, courtesy of Denise:

  1. Don’t throw it outen: Remember to use your council’s doorstep recycling collection, if you have one. If you don’t, log on to www.recyclenow.com and enter your postcode details to find out where your nearest recycling centre is.
  2. Get your hands dirty: It’s summer, so get a compost bin for your garden and food waste. Feed it with vegetable and fruit peelings, teabags, eggshells and garden prunings to create compost that will make your garden bloom.
  3. Keep it in the kitchen: Make space next to your kitchen bin for a recycling container – then it’s as simple to recycle as it is to throw away.
  4. Drop before you shop: Don’t forget, your local supermarket probably has recycling banks, so you can also recycle while you shop.
  5. Buy it loose: When you are shopping at the supermarket, buy loose fruit and vegetables, rather than pre-packed. Get a ‘bag for life’, rather than using endless plastic carrier bags.

Fantastic Facts

Recycle Now Week is a perfect opportunity to remind ourselves why recycling is so important for the environment.

Did you know, for example, that every time you recycle, you save valuable energy and raw materials, not to mention reducing CO2 emissions, which makes recycling a good way to help climate change. So small actions really can achieve big results. And if proof is needed, check out these amazing facts:

  • The amount of recycling we now do as a nation is the equivalent of taking 3.5million cars off the road.
  • Recycling just one recycled aluminium can saves enough energy to run a television set for three hours.
  • Every steel can is 100% recyclable. It can be recycled over and over again into everything from bicycles to new cans.
  • The energy saving from recycling one glass bottle will power a 100 watt light bulb for almost an hour, or power a computer for 20 minutes.
  • Around 20% of all the household rubbish we throw away is paper and card and approximately half of this is made up of newspapers and magazines, most of which can be recycled.
  • Recycling just one plastic bottle saves enough energy to power a 60W light bulb for six hours.
  • 250 million plastic carrier bags are used in the UK each week. They can take hundreds of years to decay in landfill.
  • Every tonne of biodegradable waste produces 300-500 cubic metres of landfill gas. Why not turn all that garden waste into home compost instead? Sounds like a blooming marvellous idea to us!
