How to win money for you and your school
Create an innovative lesson plan to teach primary school pupils about composting and you could win £500 for your school, and another £500 for you!
As well as the great cash prizes, the winners will have the satisfaction of sharing their good ideas with other teachers up and down the country....
Calling all KS1 and KS2 teachers!
We’d like your help to create lesson plans that use composting as a theme to deliver the aims of the curriculum for a subject, or subjects, of your choice for Key Stage 1 or Key stage 2. It might be a lesson plan you’ve already enjoyed using with your own pupils (we’re all for recycling!) or one you’ve put together especially for the competition.
The lesson should focus on one of these compost-related topics:
- What materials can be made into compost
- What happens inside a compost bin
- How to use compost
There are also some animated composting resources on the website which you might want to use as part of your lesson, e.g. the compost 4 fun game (where the player has to decide which materials to put into the compost bin), or the compost buddies animation (which tells a story about what happens inside a compost bin).
There’s no need to worry about how your lesson plan looks – you provide the content and we’ll do the design. The winning lesson plans will be made available on our website.
What to include
Your lesson plan should include teachers’ notes and activity sheets for pupils. Please include the following sections in your teachers’ notes:
- Lesson plan header (Subject, Key Stage, A sentence describing the lesson, Length of lesson)
- Introduction
- Main Activity
- Plenary
- Learning Outcomes (please differentiate, e.g. All, Most, Some)
- Links to National Curriculum Programme of Study for chosen subject
- Cross curricular links (where appropriate)
- Key Vocabulary
- Resources required
- Organisation
Check out the existing lesson plans on our schools website for reference – these are the winners of last year’s recycling themed lesson plan competition.
The winning lesson plan
The winning plans for each Key Stage (1 & 2) will deliver the aims of the curriculum in fresh, informative and inspiring ways – getting children enthusiastic about composting and helping them to understand how they can make a difference.
The winning lesson plans will be selected by a panel of judges who will be looking for:
- Consistency with the national curriculum for England for your chosen subject(s) and Key Stage
- A clear focus on composting, linking with the assembly resource
- Teachers' notes with clear learning outcomes, curriculum links & activity sheets for pupils
- Innovation and the ability to engage pupils
- Differentiation and/ or extension ideas for use with pupils with a range of abilities
The judging panel will include practicing primary school teachers, a composting expert and a representative from the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP).
How to enter
To enter, please email your lesson plan(s) together with your full name, address and telephone number, plus the name and address of your school, to schools@wrap.org.uk. Please make sure that the subject and key stage your lesson plan is intended to be used with are clearly stated.
