WRAP is helping the UK to meet its environmental targets through three key objectives:
- To cause the recycling or removal from the waste stream of at least three million additional tonnes of materials;
- To increase the level of public participation in recycling by adding at least four million additional 'committed recyclers', an increase equivalent to 10% of the adult population in England; and
- To reduce the amount of food thrown away by consumers and ensure more of it is collected for composing and recycling.
Recycle Now
Recycle Now is WRAP’s advertising campaign and consumer website that helps everyone in the UK to recycle more. The site explains why recycling matters, offers advice on what action to take, including how to start recycling in 4 easy steps, and includes a postcode locator that shows what you can recycle, and where. It also shows how easy it is to get started with home composting and keep green waste out of landfill.
Use the Recycle Now website for easy to use information, hints and tips on recycling. http://www.recyclenow.com/
About Recycling Reprocessors
As students will discover and explore, recycling involves many organisations as well as individuals. Recycling reprocessors are those organisations that recover, sort and reprocess recyclable materials so that they can be manufactured into new items. Reprocessors work individually or through their members at every stage of the recycling process to enable recycled materials to compete on quality and value with virgin materials, while reducing the carbon and environmental impacts of resource use.
WRAP is grateful to the following reprocessors for their support in funding and developing these materials:
British Glass
The British Glass Manufacturers' Confederation represents the UK's glass industry. It acts as the industry's focal point, playing the principal role in communicating the concerns and aspirations of its Members to the Government, the European Union and other external interest groups and trade bodies. Visit the British Glass Manufacturers' Confederation.
Corus
Corus, the international metals company has a dedicated team (CSPR) to provide advice and assistance to Local Authorities and other organisations about steel packaging recycling. CSPR's education arm SCRiB gives a UK wide information service to consumers and schools on the steel making and recycling processes. Visit www.cspr.co.uk or www.scrib.org
Novelis
Novelis is the world’s largest recycler of aluminium drink cans. We recycle over 39 billion used cans every year, enough to circle the world over 100 times. Novelis operates Europe’s only dedicated aluminium can recycling plant, which is in Warrington, Cheshire. The plant has the capacity to recycle every drink can sold in the UK for the foreseeable future – over 5 billion cans. www.thinkcans.com
Paperchain
PaperChain is a highly focused campaign sponsored by UK Papermakers that rely on recovered paper as their primary raw material. In 2008 PaperChain Members recycled 3.2 million tonnes of recovered paper and cardboard, saving over 4.2 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent against other UK disposal options. Visit PaperChain.
Recoup
RECOUP is the national charity developing plastics recycling in the UK, promoting best practices and providing educational and training tools. Recoup works with its many valued members and partners to maximise efficient plastics recycling and deliver real environmental benefits. Visit RECOUP.
