What to do with
Want to recycle animal bedding but don't know if you can?
Animal beds are usually recyclable at recycling centres. To find out where your nearest recycling facilities are located, use our handy Recycling Locator tool.
How can I recycle it?
- Old pet blankets or beds made from fabric can be recycled with textiles at a recycling centre (plastic animal beds should be recycled with plastics - ask an operative at the Recycling Centre to find out which container to put it in)
- Used hay, straw and sawdust bedding from 'vegetarian' animals such as rabbits or guinea pigs can be put in your household garden waste collection (if this service is offered in your area)
- Alternatively, it can be taken to a recycling centre (also known as the 'tip') and recycled with garden waste
Hay, straw and sawdust can also be added to your home compost bin
What about animal waste?
- Pet waste such as cat litter should be bagged and put in the general waste bin
If in doubt, always check with your local council.
