Recycle your Christmas cards
Call to support charities this January by recycling your cards
Why should I recycle my cards?
Over one billion Christmas cards will be sent this year, which is a huge amount! Luckily, there are lots of places you can take your cards to be recycled and it's one of the simplest ways to cut down your festive waste. It can help generate money for charities at the same time!
Where can I recycle my cards?
Special Christmas card recycling bins will be in place at selected retailers throughout January. There are many schemes you can take part in. One example is the scheme which is being run by the Woodland Trust - supported by WHSmith, Tesco, TK Maxx and Marks & Spencer. So keep a look out for the special containers when you go shopping. Your cards will help generate money to create new woods in the UK.
Can I recycle them in my doorstep collection?
Some local authorities do collect cards, but the majority don’t as they have to be processed separately to remove all the glitter and shiny bits, so it’s best to check with your council before putting them in your recycling bin. However, charities that collect the cards have made special arrangements for this to be done.
Fiona Phillips
“During the party season, we normally get through plenty of glass jars and bottles which can all be recycled. You can even recycle jar lids as long as you separate the lid from the jar."
