Yes - The great news is that it's never been easier to recycle old Yellow Pages directories, 99% of local authorities now accept them for recycling, so you can put them in a paper recycling bank or use your council’s paper doorstep collection.

Yellow pages

What are they made from?

Yellow Pages are made of white paper and are printed with yellow and other coloured inks.

How/what happens when they are recycled?

Millions get turned into animal bedding, cardboard, Jiffy bags, egg boxes and loft insulation, and some paper mills can now recycle them into newsprint.

What can I do with them?

Increasing numbers of people are giving them to schools for regional recycling competitions, such as the Yellow Woods Challenge.

The Yellow Woods Challenge is the simple, educational and fun schools environmental programme run by Yellow Pages, working in partnership with the Woodland Trust and local authorities across the UK:

  • children simply bring old directories to school for recycling;
  • educational materials help to bring recycling and woodland conservation to life;
  • schools have fun competing for cash prizes, and
  • for every pound awarded to schools, a matching pound is given to the Woodland Trust.

If you’re not sure how best to recycle your old Yellow Pages, check what your local council is offering. Some councils collect old Yellow Pages directories all year round, but others may only run a collection when the new directories are being delivered.

To find out, please contact your local council or call the Directory Recycling Helpline on 0800 671 444 – lines are open 8:30 – 5:30 Monday to Friday, or visit the Yellow Pages Directory Recycling Scheme online.
