Diarmuid Gavin talks composting

Diarmuid’s top tips for the garden

Use peat free compost...

…especially those containing recycled materials.

Why?  Well, peat free compost helps the soil retain moisture which is great for our gardens but when it contains recycled materials it is also helping the environment.  Garden waste is biodegradable and when buried at landfill, it rots and releases methane – a greenhouse gas 23 times more potent than CO2.

Make your own compost

Use your garden waste and vegetable peelings from the kitchen to make your own nutritious compost.  Why buy compost when you can make your own!

Recycle your garden waste

If you have extra garden waste to dispose of, use your council’s garden waste scheme.  The material collected is made into compost and used locally.  Check the postcode locator to find out what your local authority collects.

Use a water butt...

Rainwater is great for plants and helps conserves our natural resources whilst keeping your plants hydrated.

Create your own 'black gold' for the garden

Gardeners throughout the centuries have valued home made compost to make their gardens greener.  And it's a great way of minimising your waste too!
